LCC Schools’ Events: Olympia Welcomes Champions of Tomorrow

Press Release | 4 November 2019

Over 2,000 schoolchildren will meet the Grandmasters and enjoy inspirational tuition and friendly competition at Olympia London from December 2-6 as the 2019 London Chess Classic hosts schools from around the UK.

Educational charity Chess in Schools and Communities, the organiser of the London Chess Classic, is proud that its Schools’ Events for primary and secondary-age children were fully booked up this year within days.

Schools participating in Chess and Schools and Communities weekly classroom chess lessons will be attending from across London boroughs and the South East, plus towns and cities as far afield as Liverpool, Teesside, Kent, Oxford and Yorkshire.

The Schools’ Events at Olympia London are an inspirational example of what the London Chess Classic is all about: educating children through chess to become champions in their future endeavours.

For a flavour of the magical atmosphere when hundreds of enthusiastic young chess players take over Olympia, take a look at this entertaining and instructive video report.

The Schools’ Events – aimed at children of all levels of chess-playing skill and experience – have been part of the Festival since its inception in 2009 and are a key highlight of the charity’s work every year. Children with special needs or other requirements are more than welcome at the schools’ events, and the venue is fully accessible.

After children arrive at Olympia London, they are given chess tuition by experienced Chess in Schools and Communities tutors, and then treated to a Grandmaster Show in the same auditorium where World Champion Magnus Carlsen and other top world players play in the Grand Chess Tour Finals.

After lunch, children play friendly chess competitions, where the enthusiasm is utterly infectious, the focus is on fun and enjoyment – and the cheers and applause for all the winners at the Prizegiving make the occasion a truly memorable experience.

Each day, a participant in the Schools’ Events is invited to make the ceremonial first move for the Grandmasters in their London Chess Classic games.

Malcolm Pein, chief executive of Chess in Schools and Communities, said: “We are immensely proud of the children who come to Olympia from all over the UK to take part in the London Chess Classic Schools’ Events every year.

“Many of the teachers and accompanying parents tell us that these Schools’ Events are truly a life-changing experience for the children, inspiring them to improve at chess and giving them confidence to succeed in other educational disciplines.”

The Schools’ Events run 9:30am-3:30pm from Monday December 2 to Friday December 6 during the London Chess Classic, at Olympia London, Hammersmith Road, Kensington, London W14 8UX.

While schools’ registration has been completed for the 2019 London Chess Classic, Chess in Schools and Communities welcomes inquiries from schools about future participation and places on the waiting list to attend.
