Demis Hassabis is co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, a neuroscience-inspired AI company which develops general-purpose learning algorithms and uses them to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges. A child chess prodigy, Demis coded the classic game Theme Park aged 17.

After graduating from Cambridge University, he founded videogames company Elixir Studios and completed a PhD in cognitive neuroscience at University College London. Science declared his research one of 2007’s top breakthroughs.


He is a five-time World Games Champion, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and recipient of the Royal Society’s Mullard Award and the Royal Academy of Engineering's Silver Medal. In 2017 he featured in the Time 100 list of most influential people.

Nigel Povah is a former Occupational Psychologist.

Nigel worked in-house for several years, before founding his own Talent Management Consultancy business, which he built up over 30 years, employing around 50 people, until he sold it to US firm PSI in June 2017. Nigel is now fully retired and able to engage in his long-standing passion for chess, as well as travel extensively with his wife.


Nigel is also an International Master and an ICCF Grandmaster.

Colm O’Shea is the Founder and CIO of COMAC Capital, a global macro hedge fund.



Colm graduated from Cambridge in 1992 and worked as an economist at Oxford Economics before moving into financial markets. Prior to launching COMAC Capital in 2006, Colm ran macro trading for Soros’ Quantum Fund and was a Managing Director in Fixed Income at Citigroup.


Aside from chess, Colm is a keen Real Tennis player and is the owner of Holyport Real Tennis Club.


Russell Picot is Chair of the Trustee board of the HSBC Bank (UK) Pension Fund.


He is a Senior Associate at the Cambridge Institute of Sustainability Leadership and was recently appointed an Honorary Professor in Durham University Business School. He chairs the IIGCC Investor Practices Programme.


Russell holds an MA in Mathematics from Cambridge and is a chartered accountant.


Etan Ilfeld is a London-based entrepreneur.


He is founder of Tenderpixel gallery, Tenderbooks, Tenderflix, Repeater Books, and the owner and managing director of Watkins Books and the Mind Sports Olympiad.


Ilfeld is the inventor of Diving Chess and the author of Beyond Contemporary Art. 

Rajko Vujatovic is a Model Risk consultant.



He is a former Eggheads TV quiz winner.


He can hold his breath for 4 minutes and is a four-time gold medallist in the World Diving Chess Championships, where your thinking time for each move is limited by your breath held underwater.

Justin Baptie’s main business interests are as Managing Director of Insight Strategic Associates, a firm of accountants dealing with the SME and HNW market and as Chairman of Savills Catering, a specialist contract catering company for schools and care homes.

Justin tries to recapture his golfing abilities when possible and hopes he can remember what to do when playing chess.

Terry Chapman is a successful entrepreneur and former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Terence Chapman Group PLC, which floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1999.


Since his retirement in 2002, he has been a keen amateur chess player, achieving the FIDE Master title and reaching his highest rating so far (2331) in 2013.


Terry shared the British Championship over 50's title in Torquay in August 2019 scoring 5½/7 with a performance rating of 2313.
