England v Sweden Schools Match

The 2017-18 Yes2Chess final was staged at the London Chess Classic alongside the daily junior activities. England defeated Sweden in a match that was played on the very same boards the elite players use. England was represented by the Dell School from Chepstow, while Sweden was represented by Stora Hammars Skola from Hollvoken near Malmo, who had qualified for their spot in the final by winning a qualifier which saw around 1200(!) schools take part.

The match was a double-round five-board contest with games played at a time limit of 50 minutes plus 10 seconds per move. The final score was 7.5-2.5 in favour of England, but as you can see from the interviews below, the opportunity of getting to play on centre stage, in the seats of the likes of none other than Magnus Carlsen (apparently everyone’s favourite player) and having their games broadcast live to the internet made for an unforgettable experience for all ten players.

You can replay the games and download the PGNs below and find the event photo gallery here.
