Kramnik wins the London Classic 2011

Many congratulations to Vladimir Kramnik of Russia, who has won the third London Chess Classic. If you needed someone to save your life by getting a draw with White, Kramnik would be most people’s first choice. He was solidity personified against Levon Aronian, rapidly liquidating to a level bishop ending. That gave him the point he needed to take the trophy.

Round 7

Nakamura was the leader by two points before round seven, when he had the bye, but no fewer than three players leapfrogged over him by winning their games. Luke McShane is the new leader on tie-break with two rounds to go, by virtue of his wins with Black. He beat English colleague

Leader with 10 points

Hikaru Nakamura took over the sole lead with 10 points after defeating David Howell in the fifth round. Magnus Carlsen is second after withstanding steady pressure to draw with Levon Aronian.

The two other English players also lost, Michael Adams for the third time in a row, to Kramnik, while Nigel Short went wrong on move 34 against Vishy Anand, who thus wins his first game in a long time. McShane (who didn't play) and Kramnik are joint second but with a game in hand on the players ahead of them.

Black is More Than OK

England’s Luke McShane leads world number one Magnus Carlsen on the ‘black wins’ tie-break after the pulsating fourth round of play at Olympia on 6 December. Football is always pinching chess metaphors so it’s time to get our own back: all the games featured ‘end to end stuff’ while Anand-Nakamura was a game of two halves.
